ART FUND PAVILION | CIRCLE   View from the Lightbox Gallery entrance   Exhibition mode   Presentation mode   Party mode   General drawings   Details showing the assemblage   70 cubic metre packing volume for storing disassembled pieces   Detail of prefabricated elements
Temporary summer pavilion of multi-functional urban space in a circle

The site, Woking, is a modern town in the heart of Surrey, with excellent rail links to the South and South West. London Waterloo is just half an hour away by trains. Victoria Way in front of the site is conveniently connected to A3 to the central London. The local infrastructure around the site is well arranged with a bridge connection over the Basingstoke Canal. The Brewery car parks and Woking railway station are within a stone’s throw over the canal.

We propose a circular form that provides multiple access, simple geometry, flexible functional transformation and easy and fast construction.

Circle for Urban Spatial Transformation: The Circle provides flexible use of space in terms of extension of the floor deck and spatial layout and the integral system of manipulating permeability by means of polycarbonate sliding door. About entering a pavilion, we postulate the necessity of many openings rather than a conventional door. It makes the pavilion as a seamless urban place rather than an object.

Circle for Simplicity in Geometry and Constructability: The geometry of the form of a circle is set out in 3.3m radius that gives around 35 sqm as required in a brief. Then, it is polygonised in every 10 degree and gives the modulated 36 panels in 570mm X 150mm. About assembling the roof in 8.6 degree inclination, 6 pre-assembled groups of beams sit on the corbels around the perimeter with steel plates connected to the primary beams.

Circle for Fascination: The circular holes are patterned on the wall for provision of daylight and LED and uplights at night time. The holes give continuously changing and fascinating play of lights and animate the space in an extreme vital atmosphere.
