| BRIDGING EVENTS: The New Parkway Iconic Pedestrian, Cyclist and Equestrian Bridge with ‘Clover-Shaped Ramps’ The entry is titled as ‘Bridging Events: The New Parkway Iconic Pedestrian, Cyclist and Equestrian Bridge with Clover-Shaped Ramps’. The proposal for ‘The New Parkway Iconic Pedestrian, Cyclist and Equestrian Bridge’ is envisaged as an urban regenerative seed so that it catalyses potential events around the area. The proposed bridge is designed by fine steel section elements. The overall mesh of the steel sections has both regular and irregular structural configurations. From the brief, the bridge requires 135m length of the ramp with 1/15 gradient on each side in order to satisfy 6m clearance under the bridge. The concept of the proposal has been developed to engage the long ramp in iconic configuration with non-linear pattern to give users diverse views and spatial potentials for the future events. The structure of the proposed bridge is to be integrated with circulatory geometry by stretching 1/15 ramp. It will give overall continuity to the structural setting out and result in the most efficient use of fine steel section elements. The basic spanning module is set up 4.75m and the overall cross will be 38m by joining 8 of 4.75m unit. In terms of constructability, the main 38m bridge will be assembles as prefabricated modules after clover-shaped ramps are erected. This will save the cost by speeding up the construction. It is a unique system to give functional diversity as well as visual icon. It gives diverse views and several ways of routes to walk. At every point at the farthest ends, users see back towards golf course and new development areas. Due to the lengthy ramps, the stairs between the turning ramps are located to provide the shorter journey to the bridge. Status: Competition Entry | Location: A630 Parkway, Sheffield, UK | Year: 2007 | Architect: Matter Organisation | Client: Rotherham Borough Council | Budget: 1.5 million GBP excluding fees and VAT | Span: 38 m | Ramp: 30 m folded, 135 m unfolded | Total Length: 98 m | Clearance Height: 6 m | Structure: Steel Truss |
